JROTC Overview

Junior ROTC is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.  Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.”   It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens.  The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation.

Objectives

  • Encourage Good Citizenship

  • Strengthen Self-esteem

  • Develop Leadership Potential

  • Improve Physical Fitness

  • Promote High School Completion

  • Provide Incentive to Live Drug Free

  • Enhance Life Skills

Benefits

  • Credit towards graduation for each successful year in JROTC.

  • A chance to work closely with fellow students in a unit during Leadership Lab and classroom sessions.

  • Develop skills that will stay with the cadet for life; leadership, management, responsibility, dependability, decision making and learning about themselves and their abilities.

  • Opportunities to "give back" to the community in voluntary service activities.

Military Obligation

  • Participation in the JROTC Corps of Cadets does not obligate the student to enter any military service.

Additional Potential Benefits to the Cadet

  • JROTC can help those who wish to compete for an Army ROTC four-year scholarship. Army ROTC scholarships pay tuition, lab fees, books, and living allowance of up to $1,600 each school year the scholarship is in effect. Scholarship recipients may attend any of the colleges and universities across the country that host the four-year Army ROTC Program.

  • Competitive appointments to West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy are available through the JROTC Program for outstanding cadets. These appointments are in addition to the regular congressional and presidential appointments.

  • At many colleges, advanced placement in Senior ROTC is possible for students who successfully complete JROTC in high school.

  • Students who have successfully completed JROTC are entitled to a higher grade of rank than other enlistees if they do decide to enlist in the regular Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserves.

  • Cadets participate in parades and ceremonies throughout the year.

  • Participation in social activities conducted by the JROTC Corps of Cadets.

  • Opportunity to attend JROTC Summer Camp at one of the major US Army Installations, with all expenses paid.

Costs

  • All equipment, textbooks, and uniform items are provided to the student at no charge.

  • Items must be returned at the end of the school year undamaged. If items are lost or damaged the student is required to replace or repair such items.

  • The dry cleaning and maintenance of the uniform is the responsibility of the cadet.

  • All field trips, social events, or gathering are voluntary and may cost a fee. Cadets will be notified of any cost in advance.

  • If a cadet is a member of an extracurricular JROTC team, they are required to meet the eligibility requirements by order of the commander of the team.
